Getting what you pay for.
When dealing with issues that are so subjective, how does a design consumer get what they pay for? By establishing and sticking to a well drafted Creative Brief. In your Creative Brief should be a section on the objective of the project. During the design process, the objective should always be in mind. Are we working toward the objective? After the Design process, you should ask did we hit the objective?

A creative solution should not be shot down just because you or one of your Board Members does not like the color blue. If your eight year old nephew does not like a certain image, his opinion does not matter if the demographic is teenagers. The question that matters most is "Did we hit the objective?"

Designing for committee does not work. Committees should be consulted in establishing the design problem and objectives. These committees should be comprised of all parties that will be effected by the solution. After the problem and objectives are established, one person on the design consumer side and one person on the design producer side should be accountable for all design decisions and held responsible for reaching the objectives. Committees and creative teams can be consulted, but final decisions should fall on the two responsible parties. The more people who have a say, the more watered down, average and ineffective your design solution will become. Committees rarely hit objectives.
